Hat trick: Army G-8 recognizes PM SSL for continued IUID excellence

For the third year in a row, Project Manager Soldier Sensors and Lasers demonstrated fielding excellence and sustained procurement transparency. These recognitions make PM SSL a benchmark for logistics across the Department of Defense.

On July 3, Department of the Army Headquarters G-8 officially recognized the Program Executive Office Soldier PM for excellence in its fielding process and 100 percent success rate on Item Unique Identification number registry. While PM SSL fields thousands of sensitive items each quarter, it continues to lead the Army by achieving and retaining success in capturing 100 percent transparency of all items.

“Since the summer of 2010, they have been at 100 percent,” said Col. Jack Wayman, G-8 Integration Improvement Initiatives, at the July 3 Pentagon recognition ceremony. “They have given the example for others.”

“There are only two other PMs that have joined the 100 percent club,” said Wayman about the exclusivity of PM SSL’s consistent performance. “PM SSL has led the pack from the beginning and deserves special recognition.”

The ceremony concluded with Maj. Gen. Robert Dyess congratulating PM SSL’s accomplishments. The G-8 director for Force Development emphasized this is what he wants to see across the board as the norm for transparency efforts.

In April 2005, DoD mandated all government equipment have their own Unique Item Identifier. The department wants to increase accountability and transparency throughout the life cycle process from initial receipt through fielding. The compliance requirement initially challenged PM SSL. The PM team is now the Army’s model for accountability improvement and lifecycle tracking through the proper implementation of the UII association process.

In March 2011, PM SSL was the first Army PM to receive the DoD IUID Team Excellence Award for the new process. In October 2011 it received the Army Acquisition Excellence Award for “Transforming the Way We Do Business” from the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics, and Technology.

PM SSL’s continued recognition for excellence affirms the team’s consistent performance is leading the way for the Army Acquisition Corps’ transparency efforts. It sets a new standard for the rest of the U.S. Army.
